After a long struggle, Falintil transformed from a conventional force to a professional one, beginning its journey as the Defense Forces of Timor-Leste.

Through this transformation, under its leadership, initially led by General Taur Matan Ruak and his deputy, General Lere Anan Timor, Falintil's primary objectives were to ensure the security and sovereignty of the nation, promote professional development for the military, and establish international cooperation with other nations. After General Taur completed his term, General Lere resumed the position of Chief of Staff for five years.

During their leadership, they faced various challenges, including crime, border security, and preparing for the future defense force of Timor-Leste.

This leadership demonstrated a strong commitment to stability and continuous development in the nation development for the military, and establish international cooperation with other nations.
